I climbed down a mountain on Saturday. Walked through a deep forest on Sunday. Today, I jogged.
The mountain is more of a mole hill, but no less a challenge.
The forest is within a suburb of Atlanta.
The jog was, is the same route as before, slightly faster.
3.6 miles.
43:35 - 12:06/mile
As a Monday update, I feel somewhat fitter but have little tangible proof. My weight hasn't really moved. My clothes fit the same. I do feel better.

Rebooting Running (Again)
Once again. Once again. Once again...
I've said it before. I expect (but hope not) I'll say it again.
I've started again.
Walk. Run.
Only now, I'm near Atlanta. Moved.
HHH.
Hills. Heat. Humidity.
I'm joining the running club at the local running shoe store, Big Peach Running. I'm not sure what I'm getting into but the people on Facebook seem nice enough. And they like pie. That's a plus.
The game plan? I don't have one. I bought new shoes. That's not exactly a plan, but it is a start. As I mentioned I joined a club. Sort of. I said I'd show up, though it has no such requirement.
I've run 3.11 miles extremely slowly. Just under 11:00/mile. Mostly, so far (as in the last two weeks), I've walked.
I'll need new courses. New tracks. New races. New, new, new.
Same old, same old?
This isn't a runner-friendly area. Road shoulders are small. Drivers are rude to runners.
There aren't as many running trails as in Chicagoland. The ones I've heard about are short. 9.5 miles. Short. Now, as it happens, that remains long to me. I hope that will change.
I head to the running club tomorrow, if I can get the rest of my schedule together.

The Tofu Cometh
Monday Check-in
136.0 lbs. (down)

Status
My weight continues to slip down ahead of schedule. Today, I'm 1.68 lbs ahead of the game. I'm where I want to be on October 14. That's encouraging because my miles are down and I ate lots of tasty, greasy food. Losing weight is more than a few extra laps around the yard, or eating nothing but granola.
Just the same, the extra laps are helping both in the immediate calorie department and in the building of strength which in turn is burning calories even when I'm less active.
A new thing on the diet, or, rather, will be, is tofu. I might hate it, but I picked some up hoping to replace some of meat eating. I love red meat, and doubt I'll retire the grill, but this will reduce some of the fats and other naughty foods.
On the running side of things, the week was a mix of long miles or nothing. Two relaxed long runs and one hard track workout. Miles piled on. My long runs will remain to unfocused on purpose. My goal is to gain a base, but to remain healthy. When the serious training begins, I need to have all basics covered: weight optimal, knees sturdy, Achilles strong, and aerobic strength deep. Everything the next couple of months is setting up for that.

Sneezy, Lighter and Feeling Fine
Monday Check-in
137.0 lbs. (down)

Status
Generally, I am pleased with my progress. My workouts have been inconsistent thanks to travel and camping, but I still walked a considerable amount. None of it was power walking, but my legs moved enough to know they are alive.
My weight is still dropping despite the decrease in calorie burning exercise. That's a little over a pound less than where I want to be at this time. No tricks, no pills, no fancy diet. Just watching the amount of what goes in. I am being careful with sugar intake. My weight loss goals are not drastic, nor hurried, and if I don't weigh what I want to weigh when I want to weigh it, I'm good. Less sugar, more water, more exercise is never a bad thing. The number ultimately is not the goal, but to be fit and run fast is. Heavier men have run faster and been fitter.
Things which might be hurting aren't. Today I hope to put in a longer run, and the proof will be in the results tomorrow. Ache or no ache? Autumn allergies are kicking in. Pollen, or whatever happens in fall is giving me a sneezy, stuffy head. Never fun.
That's this week's update.

Lost a couple pounds? Maybe, maybe not. Last Monday, it was at 140.0, but had been fluttering in the 139s. Hard to tell what is reality. Not only is my scale not trusty, if I ran the night before and had not yet replenished my liquids, I might be lighter than reality. Either way, good stuff.
Last week was solid in terms of running. 32.72 miles. Two longer runs on each side, 10 miles and eight miles respectively. Yesterday was a rest day.
Everything is feeling OK, though I am wary of my knees, shin and Achilles. Good rest days and a balance of hard-easy days will help.
The week coming must resolve a complicated schedule, and will not have the quality of runs I would prefer thanks to a travel. A treadmill or two must be the solution.

Celebrating the Loss of 0.8, and Usain Bolt (video)
Monday Check-in
139.2 lbs. (down)

Status
With a few decent weeks of running behind me, I am starting to see results. The last five days have seen my weight below 140. Barely, but there. The consistency is good to see, especially since I dined out a few times. Not enough yet to claim weight loss exactly, but the slope of the line is headed in the right direction.
I ran 26.75 miles this week, and walked another 4.00. My weekly miles continue to increase essentially by increasing the length of my shortest run. My top distance remains 6.0 miles.
Consistency will remain my biggest hurdle. This morning's run, for example, was waylaid by a thunderstorm. Now, in a few minutes, I hope to grab what looks like a few hours of sunshine. Humidity will be high, and my intended running path might be soaked. Will I last the entirety of my run, or cut it short?
Nothing hurts at the moment, outside of a dull ache in my thighs. My Achilles, while still recovering, seems to be getting used to this running thing.
Need some inspiration? Watch Usain Bolt of Jamiaca tear apart the 100 m WR (9.58), and make Tyson Gay's American record (and third best ever) of 9.71 look pedestrian. Nothing much to say here, except, "Duuude, like wow!"

My weight hasn't changed and I don't know why, but that hardly impacts my game plan. My scale isn't exactly top-of-the-line.
My pulse dropped a considerable amount. While this is welcome, like my weight, I don't know why. I simply have not trained enough to explain it.
Took three unexpected days off, and have yet to see what difference this makes. The first day was needed as a rest day, but the next two were the result of rain and heat, plus personal commitments. My return last night was a dreadful exercise in the heat. Today looks to be cooler, but not much, and the humidity is expected to be very high.
With the heat and three days off, my mileage will be lower.
Achilles problem has bothered me less. The three days hopefully helped rest them.

Losing Myself Ounce by Ounce
Monday Check-in
140.0 lbs.
54 - Pulse

I thought it is time to start tracking things again. My goal, however long it takes to get there, to be at 125 lbs. The number is somewhat arbitrary. When I was my quickest, I tipped the scale at 107. I weighed as low as 139 in the last two weeks, but today am 140.0.
As being arbitrary goes, I have my eyes on weighing 125 on May 1. Why 125? Why May 1? May 1 is when the Illinois Marathon/Half Marathon is run. I want to run one or the other, and to run well, I need to be slimmer. Simple as that. 125 is a nice, basic number. As good as any. I do not expect to weigh 135 on May 1, but all of this is in God's hands, not mine.
To get to 125 from 140, I need to average 0.0553 lost lbs a day, or, 0.3871 lbs a week. Things will not be this snug, and hopefully starting with a bang, but I can't dwell on this. It is under two lbs in a month, so it seems all very reasonable, but weight loss is never all that easy.
I want also to lose five lbs my first month. The reason this is plausible is the severe changes I am making when compared to July. First and foremost: lots of running. Since kicking things up again July 23, I have logged 25.4 miles running, and six miles walking - 31.4 miles in all. Not a lot in the bug scheme of things, but moving forward with increased miles. I'll be at 20 miles/week next week, and at 34 miles/week by month's end. That all should get me close to my goal, but who can say?
Right now, I feel good after last night's five miles. Last time I ran I ran close to this was April 6, with a six mile treadmill workout. My Achilles aches a little. No surprise here, but I need to find the right balance.

As “overuse” disorders, Achilles tendonitis and tendonosis are usually caused by a sudden increase of a repetitive activity involving the Achilles tendon. Such activity puts too much stress on the tendon too quickly, leading to micro-injury of the tendon fibers. Due to this ongoing stress on the tendon, the body is unable to repair the injured tissue. The structure of the tendon is then altered, resulting in continued pain. - FootPhysician.comHurdles include injury, time and motivation. Same three big issues for any runner. It is one thing to tick off five miles as a long run, and another to run eight as a long run, with five as the short run. Yesterday's workout took 1:20 from leaving my driveway, getting to the track, running and returning. Then recovery issues are involved. The time adds up. Naturally, if I keep at it, my running time will drop per mile, but there is no getting around the bigger reality of parsing out the minutes each day and finding ways to be as efficient as possible.

Been sometime since I updated this. Been too long since I ran. Weight and pulse are both up. Nothing unexpected after roughly a month of inactivity. Suprising, though, is the amount of both. Three-five pounds and ten beats? It could be, now, I am sitting at a desk, unable to relax the same way I could at home.
Nothing is sore today, and a light run tonight is in order.

A little lower in both categories, and sick all around.
Salisbury Steak is my solace this afternoon, stuffed head. A leftover from running in the rain, or just the autumntime hayfever blues?
Today's a no training day, so I can afford to be sick. Eating is no thrill, and maybe I will lose another few ounces as a result. I need to eat, then a nap may be in order. The taste is strong enough the break through my existential misery.
All said, I've had better days, but I've had worse.

A Winter Comes With Miles Foreboding
Monday Check-in
130.4 lbs. (up)

Weight and pulse steady, slightly up. A bigger question is fitness.
Though (and perhaps because) mileage has wavered greatly, my workouts have been good. Friday's quickened pace, and Sunday's easy eight miles both felt right. Missing are miles. I do not want a break if it means overall, my times do not improve. My progress has been slowly built, but can be lost in a blink.
While I have stated goals in my race list on the left, I know that getting under 20:45 is not likely. A long winter of cold miles is ahead: running early in the morning; my body gathered tightly in turtlenecks, cotton gloves, hats and rain; eyes watering, feet slipping -- this is what stands between me and next March and running hard toward sub-20.

From age to age, God is still the same. Me, no, no. 42 is coming on strong, and I'm not the same.
With Saturday's long bike ride (34 miles), my legs are tired. My calves are tight, and my left hamstring aches. What impact the bike has on running fitness I have no idea. I do know last night's 4.2 miler was a tough one.
My mileage dropped as low as 18.1 miles, the first 7-day period I have been under 20 miles since July 4. The good news is, compared to last August, I am far ahead of the game. That is not counting the bike ride. There was no riding in 2007.
Weight remains steady although slightly lower, pulse slid up a spot or two.
Overall, I believe I am continuing to get fitter. Last Thursday's track workout had a few bright areas, my weight is slowly edging down, aerobically I am stronger. I need a race to find out, but am rethinking the wisdom of racing this weekend. I need a long run. Can't reasonably do both. Waffling here.

Good week overall, discounting yesterday morning's miserable outing. Weight remains steady, pulse slid down a spot.
Carl Sandburg said Chicago is a city of big shoulders. Not mine. My shoulders are small, and after lifting a dumbbell a few times, I am aching this morning, I'll hold off the temptation to lift today, and ease into it. My -- hmm, I'm not sure what the muscles are called -- the one that connect my pecs to my soulders -- hurt.
Any improvement will help my speed, and there's no good that can come from rushing into this.

A strong week of running, culiminating yesterday in a comfortable eight-mile run and 37.65 miles accumulated. A couple course PRs makes all look promising. Still, it ain't progress unless there's progress. Since my goal is singular: break 20:00 for a 5K, then getting closer to that in a race is the only progress that counts. Still, the evidence is favorable. I need a race to find out.
My weight is more or less the same, but not drastically down as I expected. I weighed in very low a few days last week, but, today, my official weight day, I am above. I hope all those sit-ups are adding muscle weight. The scale was not as friendly as it had been.
Just for fun:

Rain is thundering down this Monday morning. It is a welcome rest day, and, hopefully, the rain will drain some of the humidity away for tomorrow. Strange to see darkness at 7:41. I have power, but it is the kind of storm which can zap the lines. The thunder is very close.
July had more miles than other months, finishing at 124.99. My previous high was 102.85 in August 2007. I averaged 28.22 miles/week, also a high, also beating last August's 23.23 average. Hopefully, this will pay dividends in races. This month looks to be around the same.
My pulse has generally stayed the same, but my weight is hovering slowly downward. It is like a leaf falling on a gusty day. Eventually, it will go lower, but a blow of the wind temporarlily takes it back up. Do the right thing, and right things will result. If the right thing is lower weight, great. If I regain lost weight as musles, trading, then, muscle for fat, that is good too. God is a better physiologist than I am, so I'll concede His call on this.
I have started sit-ups and push-ups again. Push-ups, mostly, and can see minor definition. I regret how inconsistent I am.
With last week's race being such a bomb, I'm not sure what to think. Am I stuck in the 22-23 range? I don't think so, but I am also racing a calendar as well as a clock. Each year, it will be harder. Others have broken 20:00, but this hardly guarantees I will. I might be laying a good foundation to do my best, but my best might never be sub-20.

Nothing from Nothing: No Action, No Change

Nothing'from nothin' leaves nothin. Didn't run. Didn't lose weight. Jus' didn't.
Wedding over the weekend in Iowa smashed my running opportunities. All for a good cause, as I stood as a bookend at a vineyard in Indianola, Iowa, watching an old friend make a new vow.
What this means: weight and pulse made no real changes. Three days off, and today will make four. Tomorrow is the Spivey workout, the day adjusted to meet our race needs (most of us are racing Frday).
In other words, everything is out of whack. How will this affect my race aspirations?

Feelin' Groovy on a Monday Morning
Monday Check-in

Feeling good. Fewer bad runs than the week before, though rain embattled the last several. My miles hit 36.2 for the week ending Saturday June 21, and looks like it will hover near or just about 30 for some time going forward.
Pulse dropped, but is essentially stable, just like my weight. However, I think my weight is down overall. My belt is tighter, a good thing.

2.2 Pounds Lighter on a Sunny Monday

Pulse is up a beat or two. Is that residual from yesterday afternoon's run? That's my guess. Otherwise, I feel good. Nice to start a rest day already rested, save for a bit of morning hay fever.
Weight, though, is significantly down. Last week, 134 was it, and my trusty scale isn't trusty. High then, low now? Still, lower beats higher.
I put in 29.75 miles for the week ending yesterday, and have reduced my meal portions, and I must be losing something. Overall, for the month, I am up to 55.71 miles (more than January through March combined).
My rolling 31-day mileage is at 112.97, and is the 11th consecutive day above 100 (through June 19, as I have accumulated enough to hold at 100 until then). My highest is 115.0 miles, completed September 10, 2007, but, if I run consistently this week, this will be surpassed as early as Wednesday, peaking near 145 in mid-July. Looks today like I will put in around 121.39 miles for the month, depending on Jim's next workout schedule.
Yesterday's long run - I wonder how long before it has a fitness impact? While it felt easy, it was slow. That's partly because the distance intimidated me some, and I had such a bad run Saturday that I wanted my body to let me know quickly it was not ready. It is one thing to walk home a mile, and another thing to walk four.
My left knee feels a slight ache. Not the patella, but the little bone on the left, right below. Today's rest will do it well.

Losing Weight, or Losing Ground?
Monday Check-in
134.0 lbs. (up)
47 - Pulse (up)

Weight is barely up to count, but it is against the trend of going down. I got up a lot last night and drank Sprite. My place was hot, it was cold.
My pulse is up a small amount too. I don't know why, but I am unconcerned. I know I had a tough week of workouts, and, over the last 31 days, have run over 100 miles. This will pay off, and is paying off.
The struggle to lose weight has been just that -- a struggle. I expected easier, quicker results. In my best days, I was under 110. 107. Now, at the same height (5'5.75"), I am still 23 lbs heavier. If I hit 100 miles per month (I am scheduled to run 120-130/month), this will be, naturally, 300 by September 9. I can be down to a very healthy 123-125 by then.
Beats the awful days of bronchitis which took me there though, so tired that going up stairs exhausted me. My lungs and endurance have never been the same, and, at 41, am finding a new foe. Thankfully, things are getting better.
Time to pour some coffee. New website project in the works. Drinking El Diablo, Intelligentsia today.
